Mangoes are so popular in Southwest Florida. They even have their own festival!

The 2022 Mango Mania Festival will take place Saturday, July 16th from 9 am to 4 pm and celebrates the area’s abundance of mangoes and other tropical fruit. It’s one of the most popular mango festivals in Florida.

You can thank the region’s climate for that stroke of luck. The climate here is similar to that of the mangoes’ native climates of India and Southeast Asia.

The Mango Mania and Tropical Fruit Festival will be held at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Catholic Church at 12175 Stringfellow Road in Bokeelia. Check for ticket prices. It’s fitting because Pine Island is especially suited to grow the sweet, tropical fruit.

Mango season in the Sunshine State is at its peak in the summer. It runs from May through October. There are about 50 types of mangoes grown on the island. There are usually more than 20 mangoes available to try.

Several cooling tents, air-conditioned portable toilets and misters spread throughout the festival will also help keep attendees cool.

Several cooling tents, air-conditioned portable toilets and misters spread throughout the festival will also help keep attendees cool.

There will be a tasting tent and places to buy whole mangoes, jam, smoothies, chutney, ice cream, tea and bread.

Home cooks and amateur chefs can enter a food and recipe contest. There will also be mango and tropical fruit-based beverages and food for sale. After all, it wouldn’t be Mango Mania without it. Don’t miss the free mango tasting table.

If you want to learn more about mangoes at the festival, you can attend educational talks about tropical plants, palms, art and more. Tropical plants and trees will also be for sale.

Don’t forget to say hi to the Mango Queen either!

If you’re not into mangoes, that’s ok, too. While your friends and family gorge on nature’s sweet nectar, there are options for you as well.

Vendors will be there to offer everything from mango trees to Native American jewelry.

There will also be an area for family-friendly games and mango-themed activities.

You’ll be able to participate in:

There is always live music to help keep you energized!

Enjoy Mangoes from Pine Island Whenever You Want

Enjoy Mangoes from Pine Island Whenever You Want

If you love mangoes so much, you can get them whenever you want from “The Mango Factory” or any other Pine Island mango farm. They’ll ship fresh mangoes to your door and all fruit is guaranteed to arrive in good condition and ripen properly, or you’ll get your money back on the damaged portion. More information can be found here: https://www.themangofactory.com.

If you’re local or don’t mind a bit of a drive, Pine Island Tropicals and Fruitscapes Nursery in Bokeelia on Pine Island are known for their mangoes and other tropical fruit. Have you ever tried a Barbados cherry, jujube fruit or black sapote? You can also try Seminole pumpkin or guava bread.

When Did Mango Mania Start?

Mango Mania is the brainchild of former Chamber President, Jerry Myers. Normally for locals, Mango Mania and Pine Island go hand-in-hand. It started there, but it’s since grown and expanded into Cape Coral.

The idea for the original festival came out of desperation. Myers needed to pay the bills and he was desperate to raise money. The Chamber didn’t even have enough funds in their bank account to cover the electric bill. Myers had a field full of Pine Island mangoes and at a board meeting, he proposed the idea to hold a festival and sell them.

The festival started at Bokeelia’s Our Lady of The Miraculous Medal Church in 1996. It then moved to an empty field on Stringfellow Road and a KOA Kampground in St. James City, which the event soon outgrew. It lasted three years in St. James City before moving to the German American Social Club in unincorporated Lee County. According to an article from a local newspaper, no other venue on the island could handle the traffic and parking from Mango Mania’s thousands of attendees.

How to Cut a Mango

Mangoes are downright delicious, but cutting them can be tricky. Instead of leaving this page and searching YouTube for a video, we’ve provided one for you—so you can start enjoying your fruity treasure a little more quickly.

This is what you’ll need:

  1. Wash the mango and remove the skin with the Y-shaped peeler. As you begin to expose more pulp, use the paper towel to hold the mango so it doesn’t slip out of your hand.
  2. Place the mango on a cutting board and slice it in half, avoiding the pit. Using the chef’s knife, aim it at the center and slice the sides, still avoiding the pit.
  3. Hold the mango upright and cut the rest of the flesh off of the pit.
  4. Slice that cut horizontally in halves and then into smaller wedges.
  5. Enjoy!

Royal Shell is doing its part to help out the local Southwest Florida environment.

On June 7, Ocean Habitats installed eight artificial Mini Reefs at the Royal Shell Port Sanibel Marina.

The effort is part of Ocean Habitat’s Thousand Reef Challenge—an effort to rebuild Florida’s living coastline.

It also helped kick off World Oceans Day on June 8.

“Royal Shell and Royal Shell Port Sanibel Marina are proud to rally behind the Thousand Reef Challenge. As a real estate company, Royal Shell handles an array of properties, many of which are surrounded by bodies of water that further enhance the properties’ beauty and make for quality waterfront living. Before we proceed, we must make it our business to protect our coastline with as much passion as we have for real estate,” said President and Managing Broker, Michael Polly.

Royal Shell and Royal Shell Port Sanibel Marina are proud to rally behind the Thousand Reef Challenge

One artificial Mini Reef is 24 inches by 36 inches. The lightweight apparatus, valued at $250, holds six to 10 large fish all year, supports over 500 fish and crustaceans per year, filters between 25,000 and 35,000 gallons of water a day and holds 20 to 30 panfish.

These reefs, designed to mimic a mangrove-like habitat, are vital to the Sunshine State’s coastline because they elevate the water quality and over time a community of fish will develop and thrive, including larger fish like grouper and snapper, and other marine animals like stone crab, shrimp, and spiny lobster. The Mini Reef lasts 10-plus years and it’s also alligator-proof.

The Royal Shell family came out to support the initiative. Later we were joined by a local radio station and TV news reporter.

Raffle prizes were given out as well. They were designed to celebrate Florida’s natural treasure, its water and unique beauty. Prizes included a boat or kayak rental from Royal Shell Port Sanibel Marina, and a gift certificate from Adventures in Paradise for a lunch and shelling cruise or a dolphin sightseeing cruise.

Royal Shell Port Sanibel Marina Can Hold Up to 30 Mini Reefs

The reefs are put in under the marina’s docks and they’re made from polypropylene rope, fiberglass, PVC pipes and crab-trap floats. They can also be installed in brackish, saltwater or freshwater.

The reefs are designed and manufactured by the Fort Myers-based Ocean Habitats. They also come in two sizes, standard and the smaller “sampler,” installed under canal docks.

According to Ocean Habitats, each Mini Reef habitat can support 60 different marine species. When it’s fully developed after a  year and a half, the Mini Reefs can clean 35,000 gallons of water a day.

Royal Shell Port Sanibel Marina Can Hold Up to 30 Mini Reefs

Royal Shell is reaching out to individuals and other businesses to meet its 30-Mini-Reef goal at the marina. So far, eight have been installed. With the additional 22, the 30 reefs will clean nearly 330 million gallons of water a year.

If you’d like to help, you can donate here, https://www.facebook.com/OceanHabitats. Or drop off a check at the Royal Shell Port Sanibel Marina Ship Store, 14341 Port Comfort Road in Fort Myers. Please write “Reef Effort” in the subject line. All checks must be payable to Ocean Habitats.

If you’re on the East coast in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach or any other part of South Florida, the West coast is only about a three-hour car ride across Interstate-75 (Alligator Alley). If you’re thinking about visiting for a weekend getaway from Tampa, it’s about a two-hour drive south on Interstate-75 as well. If you’re coming from Central Florida in Orlando, Ocala or Gainesville, the drive isn’t bad either. It’s only about four to five hours. If you’re a resident of North Florida in Tallahassee, Jacksonville, or anywhere in-between, it’ll take you a minute to get to Southwest Florida, but a Florida West Coast getaway is so worth the drive. If you’re in North or Central Florida and you don’t want to drive far, Ocala is a closer option!

How Do You Plan a Staycation for Florida Residents?

Think about planning your staycation in Florida like it’s a real bonafide vacation, but with less stress. You’ll still need time to prepare, but you won’t have to go on a plane and deal with the fuss that comes along with that. This makes it perfect for a last-minute Florida getaway. Figure out where you’re going to stay, and think about what you’re most looking forward to doing. If you’re bringing the kids with you, you’ll have to make sure you have things scheduled for them to do, of course. Think of a loose itinerary, but keep in mind that you’ll probably want to do things that come up last-minute, so make time for spontaneity.

One of the best perks about a staycation in Florida is that you don’t have to book a flight or deal with all the hassle at the airport. No limited space in your carry-on, long TSA lines, and best of all, no crowded airplane. And if you’re scared of flying, you won’t even have to worry about that. When you drive, you can also bring more stuff with you like pillows, blankets and pet accessories. Car rides are generally more comfortable because you can have more space to stretch your legs, and your pet will appreciate the extra legroom as well. You can also create a virtual classroom for the kiddos so your little students won’t miss a beat.

Enjoy Southwest Florida Beaches

Enjoy Southwest Florida Beaches

If you live on the Atlantic side of the Florida peninsula, why not check out the Gulf Coast and see what it has to offer? The water looks different. It’s more of a turquoise- blue-green versus the Atlantic’s clear, aqua-like water. The sand is finer on the West coast and we hear the water is warmer, too. And if you live far away from the beach now, go ahead and treat yourself to a Florida staycation where you’re either staying on or near the beach. Nothing is more relaxing than that.

If you’re looking for a true beach getaway, we highly recommend Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Barefoot Beach, Lovers Key Beach and Fort Myers Beach. We know all the good Florida vacation spots and we have the best Florida staycation ideas. If you want to plan a memorable trip and create memories you’ll cherish forever, we can certainly help!

Sanibel and Captiva Island Beaches

won’t be able to take any live shells with you. The Sanibel Lighthouse Beach is also worth a visit. It was one of the first lighthouses on the Sunshine State’s Gulf coast north of Key West and the Dry Tortugas. Captiva beaches also have some serious views of the sunset. You could stare at them every evening and they’d never get old.

Barefoot Beach Preserve County Park

The great thing about this beach, located in Collier County close to the County Line, is that there’s also a nature trail full of plant identifiers, mangrove swamps, shade, tidal creeks, and the occasional gopher tortoise.

Lovers Key State Park Beach

This beach is more isolated than others, making it the perfect option for nature lovers. You can also rent canoes and kayaks here if you want to get really adventurous.

Fort Myers Beach

This is the best of both worlds. One end of the island is full of restaurants, shops and bars. It’s also where the popular pier is located. The other end of the island is quieter and a good option for families. Fort Myers Beach is also centrally located, so it’s a good option if you want to be in the middle of everything.

Visit Ocala in Central Florida

If rolling green hills, a natural forest, horseback riding and an award-winning golf course appeals to you, Royal Shell also has Ocala vacation rentals available in Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club. Ocala is about four hours away from Southwest Florida, and it’s also a convenient locale if you live in Central or North Florida.

Southwest Florida is Known For Fishing

According to Fishing-Florida.com, Southwest Florida has some of the best backwater fishing in the state. This means fishing in an extensive network of bays, tidal creeks and mangrove islands.

Southwest Florida is an angler’s paradise. The Gulf Coast features thousands of miles of white sand beaches, tons of oyster bars and acres of seagrass beds that draw in an abundance of saltwater fish.

Some types of fish you might find:

In fact, thousands of anglers visit Southwest Florida each year to attempt a grand slam, which is when you catch one of each species in one day.

Lovers Key State Park

If fishing from the shore appeals to you, local lifestyle magazine Gulfshore Life recommends Lovers Key State Park in Bonita Springs. The 712-acre preserve spans three islands, so there are plenty of opportunities to catch something. If you’re looking for a challenge, try dropping a line off the bridge and see if you can catch a tarpon.

Blind Pass on Captiva

Gulfshore Life also says that Blind Pass is an excellent fishing spot. If you’re staying on Captiva, or don’t mind a scenic drive to one of the most serene barrier islands in the U.S., Blind Pass is a haven for snook, redfish and more. The pass is on the left-hand side, just before you reach Captiva proper. You can either fish from the beach or from the small rock jetty.

Play a Round of Golf While the Courses Aren’t as Crowded

Play a Round of Golf While the Courses Aren’t as Crowded

Another advantage of taking a staycation in Florida in the summer is that the golf courses are more accessible and less saturated with people. Sure, you can golf anywhere in Florida, but why not try something new and tee up on an island or near the beach with Gulf of Mexico views.

And if you want to experience true island-style golf, check out The Dunes Golf and Tennis Club at 949 Sand Castle Road in Sanibel.

Visit Fort Myers Beach this Fall for Roar Offshore Racing

Visit Fort Myers Beach this Fall for Roar Offshore Racing

Visit Southwest Florida for a beautiful summer vacation in Florida and come back in the fall for one of the most exciting boat races all season.

On Thursday, October 10, Roar Offshore Racing event starts with a parade of race boats over the Matanzas Pass Bridge. The parade will spill over onto Old San Carlos Boulevard, and there will be a street party afterward. What better way to kick off an event? You’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the boats in the street. There will also be live music, food and a chance to meet the teams competing in the race.

The Race Village opens at Salty Sam’s Complex on Friday morning. Spectators can see and interact with race teams and boats. There will also be vendors. If you want to see teams practicing out on the water, you’ll get a chance to see that, too.

Saturday is the day. There will be three races on the beachfront and plenty of places to view the race on the island. To watch the race, visit one of the host restaurants, a VIP waterfront table, or catch the action from a boat in the spectator anchoring area on the water. We also recommend bringing a beach chair and spending a day on the beach, or you can even see the race from a raft floating in the water.

Southwest Florida is known for many things, and one of those things is good old-fashioned street tacos. If you’re vacationing in Florida, you can find some of the best tacos in Fort Myers, also known as the City of Palms. In fact, some of the best tacos in Florida are from Southwest Florida.

Tacos joints come in all shapes and sizes. The perfect taco will be different for everyone. In my humble opinion, a good taco is made from five ingredients: a freshly made corn tortilla, your choice of meat, onions, cilantro and a decent squeeze of lime juice.

Taquería San Julian

Taquería San Julian

If you agree with this statement, you’ll probably enjoy Taquería San Julian. The best part is that there’s one in South Fort Myers and East Naples. If you decide to dine in, they have tortilla chips that taste like they were made that morning, and three mouthwatering hot sauces to choose from at all the right spice levels. In addition to tacos, Taquería San Julian Fort Myers also serves up quesadillas and tostadas de ceviche. Taco and quesadilla options include pork, steak, head, tongue, beef, chicken, sausage, tripe and shrimp. They come with onions and cilantro. Additional toppings include avocado, tomato and cheese.

Tacos & Tequila Cantina

Tacos and Tequila Cantina serve up traditional tacos and then some. The newly opened Fort Myers location has conventional tacos, but they’re also known for putting your favorite entrees into a warm and delicious taco shell. If you’ve ever wanted to try a Philly cheesesteak taco or maybe a cheeseburger taco, Tacos and Tequila Cantina has some of the best tacos in Fort Myers; you’ll want to try them all.  Other popular options include the Baja taco and California taco. The Baja features a favorite Florida fish, mahi mahi, which comes either beer-battered and fried or grilled with jalapeño cilantro slaw and avocado crema. California also stars grilled chicken, but it comes with tomatoes, bacon, guacamole, cilantro lime ranch dressing and Monterey jack cheese.

Taco Vazquez II

This taco shop is easy to miss at first. It’s a hidden gem located in a Chevron gas station in San Carlos Park. But don’t let that stop you! These tacos are downright delicious. The ingredients are fresh, the tacos are made to order and they’re always good. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see the hand-pressed tortillas warming on the griddle when you walk in. That’s always a good sign.

Taquería Celaya

Taquería Celaya

Just one more gas-station taco spot, we promise. Celaya is off of Crystal Drive in the back of a Discount Tobacco and Beer store in The Villas neighborhood. But, don’t let that deter you. These tacos are worth it. They are some of the best tacos in Fort Myers and they come layered with chopped-up meats and dustings of cilantro and onions. They also serve up steamy and tender tamales.

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop

This taco shop’s roots are in Fort Worth, Texas, and it’s a much different take on tacos than the counters hidden in gas stations and the hole-in-the-wall restaurants we mentioned earlier. The colors are bold and bright. It almost feels more like a family-friendly bar than a dedicated taco shop, but the fun, light vibe is perfect for south Fort Myers. Fuzzy’s Taco Shop serves breakfast tacos all day, and they’re also known for their margaritas, especially the frozen ones.

Chronic Tacos

This relatively new Fort Myers taco shop shares its space with a beer garden. What better combination is there than tacos and beer? Tacos come in three different styles: street style with cilantro and onions, Baja with cabbage, tomatoes and a spicy cream sauce, and finally, gringo-style with cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. They also have potato tacos, which are worth a try. What are they? Picture a deep friend scoop of mashed potatoes and cheese on a flour tortilla. It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s simple and delicious and wonderful.

California Burrito’s Food Truck

The California Burrito’s food truck has been a welcome sight on the corner of Colonial Boulevard and U.S. 41 since 2016. According to an article from the local Fort Myers newspaper, the food truck opened partly because its owners missed the types of tacos they were used to getting in California. Tacos are topped with cilantro, onions and your choice of meat. California Burrito’s also offers super tacos. These come with meat, cheese, avocado, cilantro, onions, tomatoes and sour cream. Fillings include steak, al pastor (pork), chorizo, shredded chicken with a chipotle tomato sauce, grilled chicken, chicharron or cecina, a thin marinated steak.

Is Lovers Key Florida State Park Dog Friendly?

Unfortunately, pets are not allowed on the beach as not to disturb the wildlife that lives there. However, there is a designated dog beach located nearby at 8800 Estero Blvd., Fort Myers Beach, Florida, 33931. Parking is free at Bonita Beach Dog Beach. There are also doggie shower stations to rinse off your pup. Alcohol and glass containers are not allowed.

Lovers Key, Florida History

The barrier islands of Lovers Key were destined for development from the start. Mangrove trees were uprooted, canals were dredged, but thankfully, the state acquired the land in 1983, and has since vowed to preserve it.

In the beginning, Lovers Key, Florida was so secluded, until 1965; it was only accessible by boat. After the city acquired the land in 1983, it merged with the adjacent Carl E. Johnson County Park and eventually became Lovers Key Carl E. Johnson State Park in 1996.

It’s rumored that Black Island was named after the Portuguese pirate who sailed under the flag of Gasparilla, Black Augustus, who reportedly lived on the island for nearly 50 years.

The original Lovers Key, before the bridge was constructed, earned its name because it was so far off the beaten path, it was said only lovers made the trip.

One of the things that make Sanibel Island so unique is about one-third of it is a federally protected wildlife refuge. Since 1945, the over 7,000-acre J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge has been a valued and protected home for wildlife.

The J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most celebrated birding locales in the country and you’ll find an impressive variety of species of birds here on Sanibel Island. If your goal is to see endangered and threatened critters, Ding Darling is your best bet. It’s home to animals like Atlantic loggerhead sea turtles, West Indian manatees, American alligators, and even the occasional American crocodile.

If you told Jay Norwood Darling he’d have a hand in opening one of the most well-known wildlife refuges for endangered and threatened species in Southwest Florida, the former newspaper cartoonist may not have believed you.

The 1924 and 1943 Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist for editorial cartooning penned some conservation cartoons and in 1934, President Franklin Roosevelt appointed him to a blue ribbon committee on wildlife restoration. President Roosevelt also chose Darling to be the head of the U.S. Biological Survey, a precursor to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In 1936, Darling played a major role in funding the National Wildlife Federation. More information about the refuge is available at the free Visitor and Education Center.

Walk, Bike or Drive the 4-Mile Wildlife Drive

Walk, Bike or Drive the 4-Mile Wildlife Drive

One unique thing about Ding Darling is you can explore the park and take in the sights by car or utilize Sanibel Island bike trails. This is a great option for guests with limited mobility. The entrance fee is minimal and the park’s hours vary by the month, but it is always closed on Fridays.

Whether you are exploring the park by car, on foot or on your bike, make sure you bring your phone or tablet and keep an eye out for panels with QR codes that lead to ranger-narrated videos about the different types of plants and animals you’ll encounter along the way.

There are three main trails off Wildlife Drive:

Don’t miss the observation deck along Wildlife Drive for excellent views and photo opportunities.

Also make sure to:

Ding Darling Trails

Indigo Trail

This four-mile round trip trail leads to the Wildlife Education Boardwalk and a mangrove forest.

Wildlife Education Boardwalk

On this trail, you’ll see educational signs where you can learn about scat, also known as “poop panels.” Studying scat helps refuge staff track wildlife such as marsh rabbits, otters, raccoons and bobcats.

Wulfert Keys Trail

This mangrove-lined canal will take you to the edge of Hardworking Bay. You may even see an American crocodile.

Calusa Shell Mound Trail

This trail takes you around an ancient shell mound. It’s a great way to get to know the Calusa Indians who built them.

Cross Dike Trail

This trail connects Wildlife Drive and the Indigo Trail. It’s a laidback paved walk, perfect for hikers who want to take it a little easier.

Red Mangrove Outlook

This is the shortest walk in the refuge, and it provides guests great birding opportunities and a chance to see mangrove crabs up close. Also, look out for a panoramic view of a salt marsh.

Bailey Tract trails

The Bailey Tract is a separate 100-acre parcel off Tarpon Bay Road. It has its own set of biking and hiking trails and it offers even more potential glimpses of wildlife. You’ll pass by interior freshwater wetlands that are great places to spot the majestic birds and other animals Sanibel Island is known to attract.

Ding Darling Birds and Wildlife

This 7,600-acre refuge is the proud home to 51 types of amphibians and reptiles; 32 mammals and more than 230 types of birds.

If you’re here to see different species of birds, the best times to visit are from January through April. This is when migratory bird populations are spending their winters in the sunny and warm refuge. For people who don’t live in the Sunshine State, American alligators, dolphins and manatees are huge draws. These critters are more likely to be spotted in the summer.

To get the most out of your visit to Ding Darling, download the free Discover Ding phone app. It lets you see real-time wildlife sightings, play a wildlife trivia game and post pictures.

Ding Darling Refuge Tram Tour

Ding Darling Refuge Tram Tour

Taking the Tarpon Bay Explorer’s Ding Darling tram tour is a great way to explore the park and spot wildlife most visitors wouldn’t normally get the chance to see. Experienced naturalists can help you search for roseate spoonbills, ibis, egrets, herons and much more. They’ll also share some insight into Ding Darling’s ecology and history.

The Ding Darling tram tour helps wildlife as it reduces the number of cars on the road and protects animals from exhaust fumes. The tram is also less noisy and by allowing someone else to drive, it gives you more time to watch for wildlife and take pictures. Reservations are required. Please call 239.472.8900.
