Florida’s rainy season is generally considered May to October, with slight regional adjustments. The National Weather Service (NWS) defines the rainy season in Southwest Florida as running from May 15 through October 15. About three-quarters of Southwest Florida’s annual rainfall (45”) occurs during this period. The rainy season has three distinct phases with different weather patterns:

1. Mid-May to Early July: Stormiest phase with the most severe weather, such as tornadoes, wind gusts, lightning, and floods.
2. Early July to Early September: Fewer severe storms, but consistent rain and humidity.
3. Early September to Mid-October: Rains occur, but with less consistency.

When is Hurricane Season in Southwest Florida?

It is important to note that Florida’s rainy season falls within the Atlantic Hurricane Season, which runs from June through November. Though the defined hurricane season spans six months, nearly 90% of hurricanes occur in just three months – August, September, and October. What is the climate in Florida?

Most people think of Florida as a subtropical climate. And they’re right, as most of the state falls under this category. But Köppen classification divides Florida into two climate groups:

Humid Subtropical Climate

This climate zone encompasses most of the state, except for most of South Florida. A Humid Subtropical Climate is characterized by hot and humid summers and cool winters.

Tropical Climate

Limited to only South Florida, a Tropical Climate has a mean temperature of at least 64.4 degrees every month of the year with substantial rainfall. It only has two seasons – wet season and dry season. South Florida has areas in all three subcategories within the Tropical Climate group:

• Monsoon (Miami and directly north inland)
• Rainforest (East coast – Jupiter to Hollywood)
• Savanna (Everglades and the Florida Keys)

What is considered high humidity?

“It’s not the heat; it’s the humidity.” It’s a phrase you have no doubt heard a hundred times before. It is accurate, but probably not in the way you would expect. When people speak of the humidity, they’re typically referring to the relative humidity. But relative humidity isn’t an accurate indicator of comfort.

Why? Because warm air holds more moisture than cold air. Relative humidity measures the moisture in the air as a percentage of what it can physically hold at its specific temperature. Because of this, a lower temperature with higher humidity could feel more comfortable than lower humidity at a higher temperature.

So is there an accurate measure of how comfortable the air will be? Yes, and it’s called the dew point. The dew point is the temperature at which the air would reach 100% relative humidity. This measure is accurate and easy to understand – the lower the dew point, the drier and more comfortable the air is.

Dew Point Temperatures and Perceived Comfort:

• 55 degrees and lower: Very comfortable
• 56 – 65 degrees: A bit muggy, even in the evening
• 66+ degrees: Very humid and uncomfortable

During the summer, the dew point averages around 70 degrees throughout Florida. So you’ll experience comparable humidity virtually anywhere you go. During the winter, location matters as the dew points vary drastically across the different regions of the state. Dew point temperature ranges from the 30s in the panhandle to the 60s in the Florida Keys.

 

What’s the coldest it gets in Fort Myers, Florida?

The winters in Fort Myers, Florida are about as lovely as they come. The temperatures are very mild, humidity is low, and there is very little precipitation. The coldest month of the year is January, with an average high of 75 and a low of 54. Fort Myers rarely reaches the freezing point, doing so only one day every year or two. In fact, there are only a handful of days a year when the temperatures get as low as 40 degrees!

So a winter visit to Fort Myers often won’t require more than a light jacket – even while you’re enjoying the many great outdoor activities available. You might even be able to wear your flip-flops!

During the winter, the average high temperature ranges from 61 degrees in north Florida to 78 degrees in the south – a 17-degree difference. But at night, the average lows span a whopping 28 degrees – from 38 in the north to 66 in the south.

Page Field was initially built in 1927 as a civil airport. Aviation was fairly new then. The military used the airport during World War II and there were even on-site barracks. In the 1970s, Page Field saw commercial flights coming and going.

However, by the late 1970s and early 1980s, airline travel and consumer demand for flights into Fort Myers outgrew Page Field. All airline travel coming in and out of Fort Myers moved to RSW in 1983 and the rest is airport history.

Take in Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve

The Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve is a 3,500-acre wetland preserve with a Boardwalk trail and an Interpretive Center. The entire preserve is 11 miles long and is just filled with a variety of animals and vegetation. 

If you’re looking to really trek through the preserve, there are Slough Wet Walks happening from September through to October. Be sure to check out the preserve’s website for the most up-to-date information. 

 

Cast Off at Lakes Park

Whether you’re looking to hike, bike, or kayak, Lakes Parks has something for everyone. You can bring your own bike or kayak, or you can rent what you want with Wheel Fun Rentals’ two locations at Lakes Park. They have bikes, kayaks, and even pedal boats to explore the park.

There’s a Miniature Railroad and Train Village for the kids that offers a 1.5-mile train ride around part of the lake. There’s also a rock-climbing wall and a splash pad that they will love.

For the cocktail connoisseur in your group, be sure to check out List Distillery. Started in 2015, List Distillery is the first small-batch craft distiller in Fort Myers. To experience the distillery, you have to schedule a tour either through their website or by calling them.

Paddle Through Four Mile Ecological Preserve

At 365 acres, Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve is the second largest preserved green space in Cape Coral. It has a 1.2-mile loop hiking trail that is great for all ages. Starting at the Visitors Center, this loop connects to the observation pier on the Caloosahatchee, where you can fish and look over the whole preserve. 

There are also kayak rentals available to travel through the preserve. However, there is an 800-foot portage along the kayak trail. So it’s not recommended for beginners or children. 

 

Catch a Game at Boston Red Sox Spring Training/Fenway South

Baseball fans should check out the Boston Red Sox spring training at Fenway South. The baseball stadium inside Fenway South is called JetBlue Park and has the exact same dimensions as Fenway Park. The most notable replicated feature is the Green Monster in left field that has three rows of seating within the wall.

Cape Coral is a popular fishing destination known for its vast selection of fishing areas. Whether you’re looking to fish right at your vacation home or you want to fish in canals, lakes, from the shore, and even from a chartered boat, there’s a place for fishermen or “anglers” of all skill levels to have their perfect day of Cape Coral fishing. 

 

Is the Fishing Good in Cape Coral?

Known as the “Waterfront Wonderland” because of the 400+ miles of canals, Cape Coral offers a fishing experience that draws in anglers from all over the country. Located between the Caloosahatchee River and the Gulf of Mexico, Cape Coral provides the perfect combination of freshwater and saltwater fishing opportunities that allow more fish types to be catchable during your fishing trip.

While fishing is a year-round activity in Cape Coral, some species of fish are only allowed to be caught in their respective seasons or are the most bountiful when caught at specific times during the year. Where Can I Fish in Cape Coral?

There are many different areas that anglers can fish from in Cape Coral, all of which will provide you with a fun-filled and successful day of Cape Coral fishing.

1.    Canals

There are over 400 miles of canals that are perfect for fishing both on land and in a boat. Depending on the canal, you will either have freshwater or saltwater fish available. The BMX Boat Ramp at SW 7th Court allows access to the freshwater canal system. Any canal that connects to the Caloosahatchee River offers saltwater fishing opportunities.

Yes, you can fish in the canals in Cape Coral; you can also fish off of the bridges that cross the canals. Please, just make sure you obey any posted signage and keep off of private property when fishing on land.

2.    Rivers

The Caloosahatchee River is the main river that flows right next to the city of Cape Coral and connects to the Gulf of Mexico. It offers numerous saltwater fishing opportunities along its shores and further out if you’re on a boat. It is also an outflow of Lake Okeechobee and provides anglers a great spot to fish for Bass.

3.    Parks

There are many parks in Cape Coral that are perfect for fishing. The two best ones are Bernice Braden Park and Sirenia Vista. These 10 and 8-acre parks, respectively, offer plenty of space to spend the day fishing.

4.    Boat Rentals

If fishing on land isn’t really your style, there are numerous boat rentals in the Cape Coral and Southwest Florida areas. Everything from pontoon boats to Boston Whalers is available for you to rent during your stay. Renting a boat allows you to get out on the open water and provides you with more opportunities to catch as many fish as your heart desires.

5.    Charter Boats

Another way to fish out on the open water is by booking a charter boat. Charter boats are usually focused on catching a specific type of fish in a specific location. They can be limiting if you’re looking to spend a whole day on the water. Charter boats take some of the stress off of planning a fishing trip and may provide you with better fishing tips and tricks. Many boat charters will also take care of your fishing license for you.

 

Do You Need a License to Fish in Cape Coral?

Now, before you get too deep into planning your day of Cape Coral fishing, it is important to note that anyone 16 years old or older needs to have a Florida fishing license. Even if you’re just planning on baiting hooks for your fishing buddies, you’re supposed to have a license.

There are also two different types of fishing licenses that you may need depending on what and where you plan to fish. A freshwater license if you’re planning on only fishing in the freshwater areas of Cape Coral or a saltwater license if you’re planning on only fishing in the saltwater areas. If you’re planning on fishing in both fresh and saltwater or if you’re unsure which you’ll be fishing in, there is a fresh and saltwater combo license available as well.

You can purchase your license through the Lee County Tax Collectors office, both in person (although an appointment might be necessary) or online via their website. You can also purchase your fishing license at many of the local bait and tackle shops.

 

What Kind of Fish are in the Canals in Cape Coral, FL?

The canals of Cape Coral offer a wide variety of fish all year round, from small Bluegills to the mighty Tarpons. With both saltwater and freshwater canals, there is no shortage of fishing opportunities for individuals who are new to fishing or experienced anglers. As always, please check with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for the most up-to-date fishing information and regulations.

Bluegill

One of the best-known species of freshwater fish is the Bluegill. The Bluegill is a member of the Sunfish family, and they’re omnivores so they eat everything from insects to algae. Best identified by the bluish coloring around their gills and stomach, these fish have an average length of 10 inches but can get as big as 16 inches. Because of their size, Bluegills are pretty easy to catch and clean, making them perfect for teaching kids how to fish, and the best Bluegill fishing is from March until August.

Largemouth Bass

The second of the best-known freshwater fish is the Largemouth Bass, which is also a part of the Sunfish family. This fish is greenish in color and is usually 1 to 3 feet in length. Largemouth Bass get their name because they have a toothless jaw that goes past their eyes and this “big” mouth allows their diet to be made up of fish, small mammals, and insects. Not recommended for people new to fishing as they can put up a fight when they are hooked. But if you’re willing to try it, you’ll find the best Largemouth Bass fishing to be between the months of February and May and between September and December.

Mullet

The first of the saltwater fish is the Mullet. The mighty Tarpon, otherwise known as the silver king, is one of the most sought-after game fish for anglers worldwide. Tarpons can grow up to 8 feet in length and weigh over 300 pounds. Adult Tarpons are carnivores and their diet is made up of primarily mullets, shrimp, crabs, and other mid-water fish. These fish are fighters with excellent stamina making catching one a task for a very experienced angler. Tarpon fishing is also strictly regulated, and they are a catch and release only fish unless a special permit is purchased.

Snook

Snook is another saltwater fish that thrives in mangroves and the marshy saltwater of the canals. They are silvery in color and have a distinct black line down their sides. Snooks are usually between 5 and 15 pounds. They are carnivorous fish, eating mostly smaller baitfish like pinfish or small mullets. It’s best to catch Snook from April through October; however, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission regulates fishing for them during the summer months to protect its population.

Sheepshead

Nicknamed “the convict” because of its black and white stripping, Sheepshead will steal your bait and swim away laughing. Sheepshead will also eat just about anything and their usual diet fluctuates with what is available during the specific seasons with a few staple items like shrimp and mollusks. They also love the colder waters so the best time to catch these bad boys is during the winter and early spring months of December to April.

Mangrove Snapper

Rounding out the saltwater fish is the Mangrove Snapper. Red to bronze in color, the Mangrove Snapper is one of the smallest in the Snapper family, coming in at 10-14 inches and only 1-2 pounds. They utilize their excellent eyesight and razor-sharp teeth to maintain their diet of shrimp and other small fish. The Mangrove Snapper lives toward the bottom of the canal, and they are at their peak season from April until November.

The type of bait you want to use depends on what you’re fishing for. In most cases, with the carnivorous fish listed above, any small native fish will set you up for success. If you’re stuck trying to decide if you should vacation on Sanibel Island or Marco Island, it might seem like a difficult decision. Both spots are well-known vacation areas in Southwest Florida that attract numerous visitors each year. However, each one offers a unique experience that can align to your specific vacation goals.  

Both Sanibel Island and Marco Island offer distinctive experiences in terms of activities, beaches, dining options, and more. Sanibel Island is known by many as a shelling and wildlife destination, while Marco Island’s reputation is often tied to the nearby Ten Thousand Islands and its tourist offerings. 

It’s tough to go wrong with either spot, so it’s worth taking a glimpse at what each island offers. This will help you decide which one will be best for your next vacation.

How Far is Sanibel Island from Marco Island?

Many people ask, “Is Marco Island near Sanibel?” Sanibel Island and Marco Island are only 40 miles apart by boat or about 65 miles by car.

Despite the close proximity, many visitors feel like the two destinations are worlds apart. Marco Island and Sanibel Island are both Gulf of Mexico barrier islands off the Southwest Florida coast. Both islands are connected to destination cities like Naples and Fort Myers through a series of causeway bridges and highways. This might be where the similarities end, though.

Is Captiva or Sanibel Better?

What makes Sanibel Island and Marco Island so different even though they are relatively close? And is one better than the other?

For starters, Marco Island is more developed.  You’ll see high rises towering over the shore and wide, groomed beaches on Marco Island. You’ll find golf courses, exclusive shopping, and fine dining on Marco Island. In fact, some view Marco Island as an extension of nearby Naples.

On the other hand, Sanibel Island is much more natural. In fact, you’ll find that nearly 60% of Sanibel Island is covered by nature reserves. There is only one main street on Sanibel Island, which makes the island feel like a small and exclusive tropical escape. Sanibel Island is more relaxed with bike paths, opportunities for birdwatching, and shelling.

Sanibel Beaches vs Marco Island Beaches

Since you’re considering these two areas, it’s likely that the quality and type of beaches available will be a major factor in your decision. 

As noted above, Sanibel Island is known by many as a worldwide shelling destination and its many beaches are to thank for it. More specifically, the unique east to west positioning of the island in relation to the Gulf of Mexico gives it an advantage. This leads to more shells naturally washing up on its shores. 

While you’re likely to find many shells at any of Sanibel’s 6 public beaches, a couple that stand out include: 

• Gulfside City Park Beach- This beautiful sandy beach is covered with countless shells to collect. Parking costs $5 per hour, but is well worth it once you leave with loads of shells. The walk from the parking lot to the beach itself is a scenic stroll thanks to the surrounding greenery and wildlife. 
• Bowman’s Beach- Similar to Gulfside Beach, parking is $5 per hour and you’re going to find a boatload of shells here. While you’re on the beach here, it’s highly possible for you to encounter dolphins and manatees in the nearby water. Additionally, if you need a break from shelling, you can stretch your legs by strolling through some of the many hiking trails available along the beach. 

Is Marco Island Worth Visiting?

While Marco Island’s beaches are worth visiting, it’s worth noting that there are only two public beaches available. This is certainly much fewer than Sanibel’s 6. Regardless, the two beaches and some of their features are included below:

• Marco Beach- This beach covers much of the South portion of the island and has multiple access points. You may want to arrive early as parking spaces and beach spots can be snatched up quickly. In addition, crowds can gather quickly, but typically aren’t a problem with lots of room on the beach.
• Tigertail Beach- The bigger of the two beaches, Tigertail Beach is situated on a lagoon rather than directly on the Gulf. This gives it a unique feel that may be to your liking. There are paddleboards, kayaks, and other aquatic equipment nearby available for rent. If the sight of some high rise buildings in the background will bother you, be aware that there are a few that are visible from the beach.

Ultimately, the beaches on both islands are a treat for any visitor, while Sanibel Island certainly offers more choice and room to stretch out. 

Is the Water Clear in Marco Island?

While the water clarity can depend on the weather, we must say that Marco Island has very clear water along its shores. You can feel comfortable and safe on Marco Island, Sanibel Island and other beaches in Southwest Florida.

Activities on Sanibel Island vs Marco Island

If you are going to be staying in a vacation rental, you are going to want lots of things to see and do. Fortunately, both islands are jam-packed with adventures for the entire family or the vacationing couple.

A couple of the popular things to do on Sanibel Island include:

• Visiting the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. This federally recognized wildlife preserve covers approximately a third of the island, and for many is the main reason that they choose to visit. Numerous species of birds, reptiles, insects, and more can be seen here on a regular basis. 
• Stopping by the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum– This attraction is solely in place to showcase the history of shells and mollusks and the island’s role in it. You don’t have to be a shelling enthusiast to appreciate the knowledge and sights that you’ll encounter here. You can even participate in a guided beach walk led by museum staff!
• Taking a sunset cruise- If you visit Sanibel Island and don’t watch the sunset, you’re definitely missing out. One of the best ways to view the sunset is on an evening sunset cruise. There are multiple providers on the island that offer a truly unique experience. 

Things to do on Marco Island include:

• Naples Sightseeing Tour- Head out to sea and watch dolphins at play, and also manatees if you are lucky, and the variety of seabirds.
• Take an Everglade Airboat Tour- The nearby Everglades are certainly a sight to behold. From Marco Island, most of the tours are a bit of a drive, but well worth it once you’ve gone through the experience. 
• Go to Naples and Shop- Nearby Naples has a variety of outlet and designer shops that can scratch that shopping itch that you might have. 

Island Atmosphere

If you want a low-key, laid back atmosphere, then Sanibel Island is for you. It is quite unlike many other places in Florida due to its secluded location. If you’re looking for an even more intimate and private environment, nearby Captiva Island has it. The islands are connected by a bridge and just a short drive or bike ride away from one another. 

On both Sanibel and Captiva Island you won’t see any high-rises that you’ll find in other popular Florida beach spots. There are almost no fast food joints essentially guaranteeing you’ll experience an authentic dining experience throughout your entire trip. There are also no traffic lights on the island and over 22 miles of award-winning bike trails. You’re likely to feel like you have escaped somewhere completely different. 

Marco Island has a laid back ambience much like its counterpart. Although you’ll find a few high-rise buildings that can cloud your view of the water from time to time, you’ll still enjoy your time there.  

Dining Options on Sanibel Island vs Marco Island

When it comes to dining, there is something for everyone on both Sanibel Island and Marco Island.

On Sanibel Island, you’ll find a wide variety of cuisine, including many restaurants that offer dishes that feature seafood inspired by the local environment. At the Island Cow, you can even bring your own freshly caught fish to be hand-cooked and prepared by the chef! As noted above, you won’t find many chain restaurant options, ensuring that no matter where you turn, you’ll find a unique dining experience. There are even great things to do on Sanibel Island at night.

If you’re staying on Sanibel for an extended period of time and want even more options, hop on over to Captiva Island and you’ll find even more great choices. 

While Marco Island has a couple more chain, fast-food restaurants, you’ll still be satisfied with the amount of exclusive dining options on the island. There are a number of places on the island where you can grab a great burger, steak and more.
