Fishing

Southwest Florida has long been an angler’s paradise and the favorite fishing destination of some famous ones, like Theodore Roosevelt, Charles Lindbergh, and George H. W. Bush and family. Captiva Island is a fishing hot spot, whether you want to cast your line from the beach or from a boat. If you don’t have everything you need, don’t worry. You can rent gear or go with a guide. They’ll have the right stuff. Grab the sunscreen and get ready for a day on the water.

Many people enjoy surf fishing and if you’re staying in a private home along the beach, you can cast your line just steps from your door. Others like to get out on the water. You need a saltwater fishing license to fish on your own from shore and from a boat, but if you hire a guide, they’ll have you covered. You can find several independent fishing charters that operate from island marinas like McCarthy’s Marina, Jensen’s Marina, and the marinas at ’Tween Waters Resort and South Seas Island Resort.

Head offshore for deep sea fishing in the Gulf where you could reel in some of the popular types of fish you see on local restaurant menus. Species like amberjack, cobia, permit, hogfish, pompano, porgy, and several different types of grouper, snapper and shark.

Try your hand in Pine Island Sound or in the passes between islands. In-shore species include some of those you’ll find offshore, plus redfish, snook, tripletail, grunt and what some consider the best prize of all – tarpon.

A popular fishing spot on Captiva Island is Blind Pass, along the island’s south end, where you can fish from Turner Beach or from the shore along Captiva Pass or walk across the bridge to fish from the Sanibel side. The current is strong and larger fish gather to feed on the smaller fish. Be aware of sunbathers, beach walkers and shellers when you cast your line.

Other passes best accessed by boat are Redfish Pass at the island’s north end, between Captiva and North Captiva islands. Captiva Pass at the northern tip of North Captiva is another favorite spot. Roosevelt Channel runs along the bayside of Captiva and is a picturesque place to relax and try your luck.
