If you’ve heard of Sanibel Island, chances are you’ve also heard of its sister island, Captiva. And if you want to get away from it all and truly feel like you’re on island time, South Seas resort rentals through Royal Shell are just what the doctor ordered.
We’ll make sure your rental is good to go, so all you have to do is show up, relax and soak up the Florida sunshine. At Royal Shell, we believe a vacation should be easy.
Let Captiva capture you
While Sanibel is a quaint, charming town nestled on one of the most famous barrier islands in the country, Captiva is known as its more laidback and quieter sibling.
This is where people go when they truly want an island escape
Captiva is about a 30-minute drive from Sanibel, but the car ride is a treat. You’ll pass bike riders, unique island-style homes and shops; and the views out of the driver’s side window once you reach Blind Pass are amazing. If you decide to vacation rental in Florida, Captiva Island is a spot you don’t want to miss.
All-inclusive and High-End
One of the 320-acre resort’s major draws is this: if you don’t want to leave, you don’t have to.
The island’s crown jewel is the beach, and it’s practically right in your own backyard. Why not take advantage of it? Head to the beach in the morning and start your day off the relaxing way. Visit Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille for lunch, go home and unwind, and come back again for dinner. Make sure you try the Yucatan shrimp. It is one of the restaurant’s most recognizable dishes, and you won’t be disappointed.
After dinner, take a stroll around Captiva to walk off your delicious meal and then hit the beach again and enjoy the sunset. Life can’t get any better than that.
If you want more choices
The island is filled with spectacular restaurants and shops. They’re just a short bike ride away or about a 10-minute walk from the resort.
Other Options? Stay tuned for details about resort amenities
When you stay at a South Seas Island Resort vacation rental through Royal Shell, you have a few different places you can stay.
All 3 of these rentals feature full kitchens, multiple bathrooms and at least one guest room. They offer beach and bay views and the beach cottages are located right on the beach. There is a pool near each complex and miles of white sand coastline are only a short walk away.
Tennis courts are also available and Royal Shell guests have access to Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille and the collection of shops across the street. If you’re a coffee lover, you’ll be relieved to know there’s a Starbucks.
Since these are privately owned condos that are rented through Royal Shell Vacations, they are considered separate from the South Seas Island Resort. This means guests will have limited availability to the resort’s amenities, including beach towels and chairs (Although, they are easily available to rent.)
Guests of Royal Shell Vacations will have access to:
If you have any questions or concerns, Royal Shell Vacation Planning Advisors and our other team members are happy to give you more information, including a list of local vendors that rent out items such as beach gear, bicycles and baby equipment. Most businesses will also deliver necessities like bikes, cribs, strollers and other items directly to your room.
Why not book through the resort?
Royal Shell vacations provide the same quality units and atmosphere, and it’s typically at a reduced rate. However, if you have a special amenity in mind, please contact one of our vacation planners, and we’ll see what we can do for you.
Choose from 3 different rental options when you choose South Seas resort rentals through Royal Shell.
All of them come equipped with a full kitchen, multiple bathrooms, places for storage, and at least one guest room. Units are all laid out relatively the same, but décor varies by each owner’s individual tastes.
Beach Villa Vacation Rental
This is one of the resort’s most economical options, but it certainly won’t feel like it when you stay there. The Beach Villas feature beach views from the spacious screened in lanai and the beach is only about a 5-minute walk away. If you’re a bird lover, some units also feature views of an osprey’s nest.
There’s enough room for a romantic couple getaway, or a small family. There are a few rooms near the front of the unit and one or two bathrooms. There is also an upstairs loft and bathroom with a skylight. You may want to claim this spot first before anyone else does.
If you enjoy cooking, you can take advantage of the full kitchen and spacious countertops. The unit has a built-in desk, so you can enjoy your favorite book while you’re in paradise. The living room is spacious, and you can’t beat the beach views.
Bay Villa Vacation Rental
The Bay Villa has a similar floorplan as the Beach Villa. It is big enough for a small family or a couple, and it features exceptional views of the bay. If a home cooked meal is more your style, the Bay Villa features a full kitchen as well.
Instead of a white sand beach and tropical vegetation, you’ll look out your windows and screened in lanai and see tranquil bay views and probably even a pelican or two. You’ll also be able to spot mangroves and your kids will love watching the boats go in and out of the bay.
Beach Cottage Vacation Rental
If you are really looking for the total beach vacation experience, the Beach Cottage is just what you need. Wake up every morning and walk out onto a secluded beach. It doesn’t get much better than that. The Beach Cottages are much more spacious and you’ll really feel like you’re staying in a home, so your stay in paradise will also be more comfortable.
Everyone wants to live in a tropical paradise and be pampered at least once. Now, it’s your turn.
Christie Brinkley shot her 1981 Sports Illustrated cover photo at the resort, and the rest is history. According to former owner, Allen Ten Broek, that’s what really made South Seas a household name.
In the 1930s, South Seas was known as a small hideaway. Before that, the land was occupied by Calusa Indians, and if you believe the local rumors, a few pirates.
South Seas Island Resort used to be known as South Seas Plantation, after one of the largest key lime plantations in the world
When the owner of the lime plantation sold it to his family, they began renting out the former employee cottages to vacationers. This was the resort’s first foray into the travel industry.
In 1942, two men purchased the property, turned it into a small fishing camp and called it the South Seas Plantation. A restaurant and front office were put in and cottages were renovated and more guest rooms were created.
In 1961, RCA executive, Wally Watts, formed the Captiva Island Company and purchased the property for $225,000. This is when the resort really began to resemble what it looks like today.
In 1972, Broek and his business partner, Bob Taylor, purchased the resort for $3 million to $3.5 million. In 1998, South Seas was sold to MeriStar, a Washington D.C.-based real estate investment trust. The company dropped “Plantation” from the resort’s name and spent $15 million to enhance it.
An environmentally friendly design
When the resort was first being developed, environmental sustainability was very important to its owners. One of the Mariner Group’s first actions was to downsize the property.
Lee County, where Captiva Island is located, was originally zoned for 3,900 units, but the resort’s owners decided that type of volume would overwhelm the land. Instead, the owners requested a zoning of three units per acre, for a total of 912 units, in exchange for mixing residential and commercial uses. As a result, Mariner Group became known was one of the most ecologically friendly developers on the island.
The possibilities are endless when you visit South Seas Island Resort. Explore Sanibel and Captiva Islands, bring everyone down to the Sunshine State and host a family reunion, or soak up the sun and enjoy some of the most gorgeous sunsets in the country. You’ll always be able to find something to do – and if you don’t want to leave the resort, you won’t even have to.
