For those who live in Florida and nearby states, driving to Southwest Florida for a vacation is an option. But for our guests who live farther away, or who don’t like to or can’t spend hours in a car, flying to Florida might be the way to go.  So, is it a good idea to fly to Florida right now? Here are some precautions Royal Shell, airlines, local Southwest Florida airports, and the state of Florida are taking to make sure our beaches, homes and general way of life are as safe as possible for Floridians and our visitors.

The answers to both of those questions is a resounding yes! Though it hasn’t been a typical summer, things are beginning to look a little more normal in Florida and flying to Florida is becoming more popular. Disney World, Miami and the Florida Keys are welcoming visitors—and so is Southwest Florida.

Are There Flights to Florida?


You know that it’s a good idea to fly to Florida right now if a standard “flights to Florida” Google search brings up websites like skyscanner.com and kayak.com. Whether you’re flying from New York, New Jersey, or anywhere else in the U.S., here are a few different options for which airport you can fly into. Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) enjoys nonstop flights to and from almost all major U.S. cities. It’s a hub for Frontier Airlines, which comes in handy if you’re visiting from the Rocky Mountain region. A mix of big and small cities fly in and out of the Punta Gorda Airport. If you choose to fly into this airport, you’ll be flying Allegiant Air. Either option you choose, more people are flying to Florida, especially during the cooler fall and winter months. Which Precautions for the Coronavirus Disease Should Be Taken While Travelling?

If you’re thinking about traveling to Florida for a much deserved vacation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have provided a list of recommendations to help keep you safe.

The CDC recommends doing the following to stay safe while you travel:

  • Maintain a six-foot distance between yourself and others
  • Wear a cloth face mask
  • Avoid touching frequently touched surfaces
  • Avoid contact with anyone who is sick or displaying symptoms
  • Wash hands often with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid touching your face, eyes, mouth and nose

Which Airport Can I Fly Into – Southwest Florida?


Whether you’re looking for flights to Florida from Boston or flights to Florida from New York, or from anywhere else in the U.S., there are a few airports in Southwest Florida that you can fly into. If you’re flying into Fort Myers or flying into Sanibel, for example, Southwest Florida International Airport is the main airport for flying into Southwest Florida. The Lee County Port Authority operates the airport and it has introduced a comprehensive plan to make sure people flying in and out of Southwest Florida International Airport feel safe and comfortable.

Another option is to fly Allegiant Air into Punta Gorda. It’s about a 40-minute drive from the Punta Gorda Airport to Southwest Florida International in Fort Myers. Smaller planes can fly into the Naples Airport. There are no airports on Sanibel or Captiva Islands. At the Punta Gorda Airport, customers can expect open-air boarding, increased sanitation and cleaning protocols and mandatory face masks.

What’s Open in Southwest Florida?

Nearly everything is returning to normal in Southwest Florida. Vacation rentals have been allowed to resume throughout the state and that includes Southwest Florida. Travelers are being welcomed from nearly everywhere in the U.S. Our beautiful beaches are waiting for you and so are our parks, boat ramps and vacation rentals. Restaurants and bars are open, but please call ahead for dine-in, takeout and delivery options.
